Bottle Profile Product name Coomara Original Irish Poitín Country of Origin Ireland Alcohol content 40.0% Ingredients wheat, barley, sugar beet, water & yeast Production Coomara Irish Spirits Ltd. Poitín; or poteen is a traditional Irish beverage that is distilled from malted barley, grain and sugar beet. It is a clean, clear spirit that is light, smooth and robust in character. It retains the flavours and aromas from the original raw materials used in the production process. The term “poitín” comes from the Irish word pota, meaning “pot” because it was usually produced in small quantities using pot stills in rural areas. The spirit was also sometimes known as “mountain dew” as it was often distilled secretly in the mountainous rural areas after distillation was banned in 1661. Several centuries later, in 2008, Irish poitín was accorded Geographical Indicative Status by the EU Council and Parliament. The name “Irish Poteen/Irish Poitín” is recognized to apply to the spirit distilled on the island of Ireland including Northern Ireland and which complies with the requirements of the related regulations and merits the Geographic Indicator status.
